A tray icon that shows whether you are online, and blinks when you are not. It is plain Python 3 with no build step: install the GTK and AppIndicator bindings from your distribution, then clone it and run it.

What it needs: Python 3 with the GObject bindings, GTK 3 and AppIndicator from your distribution's own repositories; the install commands for Debian, Ubuntu and Linux Mint, and for Arch and Manjaro, are in the README.
